If marijuana is far less harmful for you than alcohol what makes it illegal?

Some people like to blame this on 'right wing nut jobs', but as usual, they are wrong. I think these people might be very surprised at how many on the right feel that it should be legal, or at the very least decriminalized. I would very much like to see it legalized. I think the tax revenues and job creation would be great for our country.
